Do we have a house?
We currently do not have a sorority house. We have a house committee that raises funds so that one day we might be able to have a house on campus. Our sisterhood meetings are held on campus and we do a lot of events at sister’s apartments.
Does the sorority do community service and if so where?
We have a service committee in our sorority that handles all of our service events. Active sisters have to attend at least one service activity each semester. We have worked at the food bank, hope lodge, worked with ECU on Make a Difference Day, and have made cookies with the residents at the Where does the sorority stand on drinking and downtown? The national sorority’s policy on alcohol consumption and use is that we are to follow the federal, state, provincial, local, and college/university policies regarding alcohol use. Sisters who are of the legal drinking age are forbidden to consume alcoholic beverages while wearing the letters of Sigma Alpha Omega. There is also to be no alcoholic beverages at any of our sorority functions. Do you go to church together? Currently this semester we have started a new idea of going to different churches together each Sunday. Though we are not required to attend church together; many of our sisters do enjoy going together on Sunday. Is there any primary denomination? We do not have a primary denomination. We believe that as long as you are a Christian you are worthy of our organization. To be eligible to start the candidate process each candidate will be required to submit their testimony to the sisters of Sigma Alpha Omega. Do you have a mission statement? Our Creed states: "All Sigma Alpha Omega® activities are designed to fulfill the ideals of the sorority. These ideals are: Christian Leadership, Sisterhood, Spiritual Development, Campus Leadership, Good Scholarship, Fine Standards, Service, Excellence, and Love through Life in Christ." How many girls can be recruited a semester? We never have a set amount. We believe that God will put the girls in this sorority that he believes are right for it. How much of a time commitment is the candidate process on a weekly basis? Each week varies throughout the candidate process. You will be required to meet once a week with the candidate mentor and with your big sister. Some weeks may require more outside time than others, but if you start on the requirements early then it is not as stressful throughout. What kind of activities do we do? Throughout each month we have a series of different types of events that you can attend as a sister. Each week there is a Bible Study and we have about three or four socials a month. Each semester we have a sisterhood retreat that is always a blast and in the spring we have formal. Throughout the semester there is also a variety of fundraisers and services events. Our brother fraternity is Chi Alpha Omega. Each semester we try to do different types of events with them, along with our formal. How much does being in Sigma Alpha Omega cost? Each semester each active sister is asked to pay dues of $190.00. During the candidate process each candidate is asked to pay $200.00. We understand that money does not grow on trees so we always want you to know that we do not want you to turn away from us because of financial burdens. Our treasurer is always ready to work with each candidate and sister to figure out a payment plan that fits them best. Does SAO practice hazing? We do not practice hazing. Hazing is against the law and each candidate will be asked to sign a waiver stating that they understand that they are never to be hazed and should let their candidate mentor know if such actions are taking place. We take this matter very seriously and feel that it is not God's way.
